A Few Observations...

...at this point:

First, he sounds very awkward when talking about abortion -- I'm completely confused by his logic about how stem cell research led to his change in position, and stating that the issue is settled won't make it so. He needs to find a better explanation.

Second, as he says in this Fox News interview on Sunday, he refuses to discuss his "personal beliefs and the particular doctrines of [his] church."

He was in South Carolina again on Thursday talking to the Lexington County Republican Party when he took the opportunity to display his Southern credentials by discussing his personal beliefs:

For any evangelicals who have doubts about Romney, he said, “I believe Jesus Christ is my savior. I believe in God. I’m a person of faith and I believe that’s the type of person Americans want.”
Let's hope this turns out better than it did for Howard Dean discussing (or not) his religion.

Catholics For Mitt Romney(?)

Bob Novak mentions in this blurb that Mitt has a secret meeting with key New Hampshire conservatives.

This raises the issue of his ever-evolving stances, particularly on social issues. Will this hurt his credibility when it comes to the conservatives who vote solely on social issues? He could get torn apart in the primaries by being painted as a Kerry-esque flip-flopper who changes his views to fit the circumstances. That might be true, but for me personally the social issues are not as important as traditional Goldwater/Reagan values of lower taxes and less government involvement in people's lives, which I think/hope will be the focus of his campaign.

The Holy Cow! Candidate

Hat tip to Mooner: From The Atlantic Monthly. I haven't read it yet, but it looks interesting. I did happen to catch this line:

...he looks in certain lights like the actor Ted Danson (most famous for playing Sam Malone on Cheers), only handsomer and more wholesome, and with real hair.

That reminds me; did anyone see the Cheers episode where Rebecca mentions that she wishes that more men could send flowers? And Sam says,"Mormons can't send flowers?! I knew they couldn't dance."

Outside White House, shoulders shrugged over Romney

The Lowell Sun points out what is pretty well-known by those who are paying attention: Mitt Romney has a tough row to hoe.

Talk Amongst Yourselves...

This an open thread for anything related to the upcoming 2006 elections and the 2008 elections...

In the News

In case you haven't been following Mitt Romney religiously for the last two weeks, here's a quick recap of what's been in the news: Mitt wants the Public Health Council to drop a proposed ban on giving new mothers gift bags with brand name formula. The idea is that by banning the gifts they would encourage new mothers to breastfeed. Not all council members agree with the governor however:

Council member Phyllis Cudmore said she still supported the ban. "I don't think there's any place in a hospital for corporate America to be influencing that decision" whether to breast-feed, she said.
Apparently that's one decision the government should have a monopoly on influencing.

Ted K slams Mitt for outsourcing jobs: Mass. work farmed out to India, Utah

Ted Kennedy gets on Romney's back about "outsourcing" jobs to "Bangladesh" and Utah. Then Kennedy, showing an incredible newfound concern for the taxpayers of Massachusetts, supports that criticism by saying that "hard-earned tax dollars should stay" in Massachusetts. It's nice to know that he's concerned. I'd like an economist (or Ted even) to explain why these jobs shouldn't be outsourced in order to save the taxpayers money. Seems like that's the more responsible use of funds.

Welcome to Law Students For Romney

We're not sure exactly where this blog will go, but for right now our purpose will be to keep tabs on the Governor of Massachusetts in his quest for the White House. "Oh, but he's not running" you say. Well, we'll see about that. If the list of states he's been to in the last year -- including New Hampshire, Michigan, Iowa, South Carolina, and Utah -- is any indication, he is most definitely running.

We hope to explore the history and career of Mitt Romney and his chances of winning the Republican nomination and the White House. Some of the topics we will dig into are his religion, his political philosophy, and how he distinguishes himself from other candidates, and what effect these will have on his campaign.

We hope to use this space to keep track not only of Mitt Romney, but also of the 2008 Campaign in general. If you have suggestions for what can be done to make this blog more interesting let us know in the comments or email us directly.

"Who are these 'Law Students'?" you may ask. To start out there are two of us but we will be adding more as 2008 nears and interest increases. Be assured that we are law students, however. And despite the name of the blog, we are not actually campaigning for Mitt Romney (so back off FEC). It may be a bit of a misnomer, but hey, it's catchy. (Also, please ignore any implications that the acronym LSFR might have -- we are aware of it, but not terribly concerned).
