You know you are a mover and a shaker when
Slate gets on your case for not being hip. Actually, this article makes some well-reasoned and accurate points including the one that if he keeps cracking jokes, Mormonism will not get the defense it deserves.

Arguing that Romney's use of humor on the "polygamy" issue hurts him is like arguing that Reagan's use of humor on the "age" issue hurt Reagan in his debates against Walter Mondale. In both instances, the successful use of humor converts an "issue" into a "non-issue." Let's hope Romney doesn't start accepting political advise from this Slate author any time soon.
I have to admit that I cringe when I hear Romney make that joke. I'm not convinced that it's the best idea and I'm not so sure a little joke is going to make ancient Mormon history a non-issue.
By the way, Allan it's nice to see you've taken the torch. I hope finals are not killing you.
I disagree anonymous. Age and polygamy are worlds apart.
Well then, Marc, let's hope Romney doesn't start excepting political advice from you any time soon either. Look, if Romney is funny, it will not hurt him politically. It's as simple as that.
If you are suggesting that his polygamy joke is not funny, well, that is a problem, but not one that the Slate author raised.

His polygamy joke may have been slightly humorous the first time, but it definitely lost its charm on the 5th and 6th retelling.
That's beside the point though. This has nothing to do with being "funny"... but rather being smart from a public relations standpoint. Age is something that most people are comfortable with, polygamy is not. At a time when Romney is trying to position himself for a run for president, I simply think it is smarter for him not to bring up polgamy much. His Mormonism is enough of a hurdle in and of itself for much of his base without even bringing polygamy into it.
Next time you're going to attack my posts like that "anonymous", at least have the courage to post under your own name. In any event, I think Romney would do well in "excepting [sic]" my advice on this point.
Marc,
First, chill.
Second, being funny is "good public relations" period.
Third, the issue of polygamy will be raised as much, or more, in a world where Romney doesn't crack jokes about it.
Finally, if eye want too mispel my wurds in my atack on you're post, wut iz that two you!!!
Signed,
Courageous "George"
Marc for president, 2008!
