Redstate Editor Rescinds Support For Romney

With law school wrapping up and the bar on the horizon, I haven't been posting much these past couple of months (no one else seems to have been either). Whenever I come across something that catches my eye, I have to fight a hankering to post on it to avoid getting sucked back in (e.g., the entire Romney-Sharpton episode this past week).

I feel like this development is pretty noteworthy though. Erick Erickson, the Editor of Redstate and former Romney supporter, has jumped ship for McCain. Any thoughts about the implication of this? Is this news, along with Time's new cover, just a bump in the road or is it signaling more troublesome problems with the perception of Mitt among the public and news media? By all accounts, he had a strong performance at the debate (outside repeating his response twice verbatim to the follow question about his shift on abortion, I think his performance was near flawless), but he still seems dogged by questions of authenticity. Will he battle this his entire campaign?

I'm not worried...

I'm struck by who ignorant you are of where the attacks on Romney are coming from.

Can you cite a single serious conservative publication or author that has disqualified Romney because of this faith?

I can cite you 5 on the left side of punditry. Bottom line... it's the left making waves about Mormonism not the right.

- Jacob Weisberg of Slate
- Woodward in the NY Times
- Linker at TNR
- South at Politico

woops.... that want's the comment I wanted to post..

:)

Here's the one I wanted to post:

Is this the same editor who was enthused by Romney at first, dropped him in February, impressed at CPAC, called the race between Rudy and Romney post-CPAC, confused about Mitt's Mormonism (smacked down by Hewitt), who said Romney "shined" at the debate, then dropped Rudy over the last weeks and now upset with Romney? Again? And is going to vote for McCain?!

I've seen 4-year olds stand still longer.

Luv ya Erick. But let's talk in three weeks when you're back in Romney's camp.

I am actually very excited about Romney's progress in the last couple of weeks. His name recognition and popularity has jumped leaps and bounds since the debate and his appearance on Jay Leno, he also has jumped to the top of the polls in New Hampshire. I think things couldn't be looking better for Romney. Time magazine has such a wide readership that this could potentially really help Romney get his name out there. I believe Time is a fairly liberal magazine but I think it would be irresponsible journalism on their part if they didn't present both a positive and a negative side to Romney. Romney has been doing great lately and he has momentum so I am very optimistic.

I'm actually relieved that E-squared has pulled his support. I thought he was a hotheaded blowhard well before Romney ever came along. He has expressed religious revulsion for Romney from the beginning. Indeed, Mitt should be proud that E-squared- and the rest of the posters in the reactionary cesspool known as RedState- opposes him.
